Doctors at KIMS Icon Hospital, Sheelanagar, Visakhapatnam, recently conducted a rare and complex medical procedure. According to hospital sources, a 52-year-old patient named Prakash sought treatment after excessive coughing. The cause? A dental implant lodged in his lung.
Three years back, he had got a dental implant fixed for a dental problem. Last week, when he was sleeping, it got dislodged and by chance entered his stomach. In this way, Prakash first thought of his health. After some days, Prakash felt incessant coughing, so he visited KIMS Icon Hospital.
Pulmonologist Dr. CH Bharat performed a detailed scan and found that the dental implant had shifted into the patient's right lung. The nature of the object—a dental implant with metal components on both sides—made removal a bit tricky in order not to damage the lungs or respiratory tract.
The team performed the procedure under the aid of a specialized medical device, known as a rigid bronchoscope. It allowed the doctors to delicately extract the implant without causing any further complications.
There can occur foreign bodies in the respiratory system, as was noticed. Then is at severe potential injury inside parts, along with lungs, as by unhygienic removal a portion is damaged, and hence treatment was required to avoid injury.
Prakash has come out very well and is stable after this successful procedure. The skill of the team in this hospital has been appreciated since they had to treat this rare case which actually became a challenge.
