Republican leader Donald Trump, preparing for a possible return to the US presidency, has once again spotlighted the issue of tariffs against India. Accusing New Delhi of imposing steep tariffs on American goods, Trump warned that retaliatory measures would be unavoidable. Speaking during a press conference at his Florida estate, he reiterated his stance on equal taxation.
“Countries like India and Brazil are imposing exorbitant tariffs—100 to 200 percent—on American products,” Trump stated. “If they tax us at these levels, we will respond equally. If India imposes 100 percent taxes, it is only fair that we do the same. The choice to impose tariffs is theirs, but we will act accordingly,” he added.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed concerns over India's tariff policies. During his previous term and campaign, he frequently emphasized the need to impose high tariffs on countries like India, China, and Brazil to address what he perceived as unfair trade practices. His latest comments have reignited speculation about how his administration might address this issue if he assumes office again.
Notably, in 2019, Trump labeled India the “Tariff King” and took steps to revoke India’s GSP (Generalized System of Preferences) status. Under the GSP framework, eligible developing nations could export goods to the US duty-free. Trump argued that India failed to offer reciprocal access to its markets, prompting his administration to withdraw the benefit. Although discussions between the two nations to reinstate the GSP have taken place, no resolution has been reached.
While Trump’s trade policies have often been confrontational, the Biden administration has highlighted a stronger partnership between the US and India. US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, in a recent meeting with Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra, praised the progress in bilateral relations under President Joe Biden’s leadership. He expressed optimism that this robust relationship would continue, even if Trump re-enters the White House.
